As painful as it may be to consider and as difficult as it may be to teach, genocide is an important subject for students to learn about in school if they are to become informed world citizens.
The only database specifically devoted to genocide, Modern Genocide: Understanding Causes and Consequences covers 10 modern genocides in depth, providing definitive expertise on this delicate topic that may be used as a springboard for discussion of human and civil rights. It enables students to fully grasp the events of the genocides and the factors that led to them, showing readers repeating patterns in history and giving them the agency to work to diminish hatred that could lead to future genocides.
Highlights
- Houses more than 300 primary sources such as memoirs, narratives, and domestic and international legal documents that illustrate the progression and outcome of genocide, as well as first-hand accounts that vividly depict its impact on entire societies as well as on the lives of individuals
- Sparks discussion of topics integral to the subject of genocide, such as the factors that precede and cause genocide, the denial movements related to particular genocides, the role of propaganda in persuading the public to participate in genocide, and other mass killings and massacres not considered genocide by UN standards
- Uses the widely accepted "eight stages of genocide" framework developed by Gregory Stanton, president of Genocide Watch, to provide educators with a powerful tool for teaching students how genocides occur and what can be done to prevent them
- Offers numerous activities created by Sara Cohan, director of the Genocide Education Project, that guide teachers in properly approaching this subject

- Reviews/Endorsements
Reviews
"This comprehensive resource brings students and teachers beautifully designed, informative, and well-researched information about 10 genocides. The organization, as well as the depth, breadth, and scope of the information, is exceptional. . . . Highly recommended."—Library Media Connection
"The uncluttered layout and modern design make it easy to access the content. Users can simply select from a list of topics ('Explore a Genocide') or use the 'Analyze' link to find articles summarizing major topics within each genocide. There are also advanced search options. The 'Analyze' option poses a question (such as 'Did the United States and most other Western countries turn a blind eye to Indonesian atrocities in East Timor from 1975 onwards?'), followed by a brief essay. The sidebar in this section links to essays offering different perspectives as well as a conclusion."—Booklist
"This content and the arrangement and means of accessing it combine to create a stunning product."—Library Journal
